10 Signs a Tree Needs to Be Removed
Published July 6, 2026
How do you know when a tree has become a safety hazard? Here are 10 warning signs that indicate it's time to call a professional for tree removal.
1. Dead or Dying Tree
A tree that is more than 50% dead — with no leaves in summer, extensive dead branches, or peeling bark — is a safety risk. Dead trees can fall without warning and should be removed promptly.
2. Large Dead Branches
Even if the tree itself is healthy, large dead branches (especially those over 2 inches in diameter) can fall and cause injury or property damage. Deadwood should be removed as soon as it's noticed.
3. Trunk Cracks or Splits
Deep cracks or splits in the trunk indicate structural weakness. These can be caused by lightning, storm damage, or internal decay. A tree with a significant trunk crack is at high risk of failure.
4. Significant Lean
A tree that's leaning more than 15 degrees from vertical — especially if the lean is recent or the soil around the roots is disturbed — may be at risk of falling. Have it evaluated immediately.
5. Fungal Growth at the Base
Mushrooms or conks growing at the base of the tree indicate internal decay. The fungus is digesting the tree's wood, compromising its structural integrity.
6. Hollow or Decayed Areas
If you can see cavities, hollow areas, or extensive decay in the trunk or major limbs, the tree's strength is compromised. A certified arborist can assess whether the tree is stable.
7. Root Damage
Roots that are cut, damaged, or lifting pavement can destabilize a tree. Construction damage to roots is a common cause of tree failure years later.
8. Co-dominant Trunks
Trees with two or more main trunks that form a narrow V-shaped crotch are prone to splitting. The bark trapped between the trunks (included bark) weakens the attachment.
9. Pest Infestation
Heavy infestations by borers, beetles, or other pests can weaken a tree to the point of failure. Emerald ash borer damage is a prime example in Green Bay.
10. Storm Damage
A tree that has lost more than 50% of its crown in a storm, has a split trunk, or has exposed roots may not recover and could be a safety hazard.
